Women in New Roles heads to Trinity

The Collegian, Tuesday, 04 May 2010, Andrea Conley

The Women In New Roles program is headed to Trinity River Campus in time for the Fall 2010 semester.

Since the program’s inception at South Campus more than 32 years ago, 89 percent of its participants have successfully completed it, said psychology associate professor Treisha Light. WINR is currently offered on South, NE and SE campuses.

The program, which applies toward an associate degree, includes six hours of credit in Applied Psychology and Psychology of Adjustment. Dr. Tahita Fulkerson, TR Campus president, said she looks forward to the expansion. “Women In New Roles is one of the district’s most successful programs, verified by the lives it has changed for the better in the last 30-plus years,” she said. “We will be happy to continue the traditions of the program at Trinity River Campus.”

Sociology professor Lori Fowler was chosen as WINR coordinator for TR. “We are responding to a number of student requests,” said Fowler, who headed the program at NE from 2008-2009. “We found that students had gone to the Student Life Center asking to start a club for WINR, and when we learned about that need, we decided we needed to host the class. “We are anxious to see it grow and for the students to know that they will be more prepared with life skills, interview skills and hopefully launch into their future education and the workforce. We want to get them into the real world educated and confident.”

Dr. Cheryl Taylor-West will teach the WINR classes at TR. “We are very, very excited,” said Taylor-West, who has taught at every TCC campus except TR. She noted that many women who enroll in the program are intimidated by the thought of enrolling in college.

“We want to help them overcome their lack of confidence and become successful women in their communities and in whatever careers they choose,” she said. “The class gets very personal and intimate. Each member of the class works together, and they all help to support and motivate each other. There are just so many opportunities for each one of them to come forth and use what they have as individuals to make it beneficial for everybody else.”

Taylor-West said those who complete WINR often go on to open their own businesses, complete graduate school and realize other great accomplishments as well as mentor others who subsequently enter the program.

“Many times, WINR graduates will get good jobs and then call us back when they see job openings at their workplace and recruit applicants from us,” she said.

TR students who are interested in enrolling in WINR can contact counseling director Louann Schulze at 817-515-1280.
